ADA – The East Central University men's basketball head coach Ja Havens has announced the signing of two players for the 2018-19 season during the early signing period.  The Tigers will welcome Joshua Apple (London, England) and Matthew Garriga (Murphy, Texas).

2018-19 MBB Early Signees
Joshua Apple, F, 6-7, 210, So., London, England (Collin College)
Matthew Garriga, G, 6-2, 165, Murphy, Texas (Wylie)

"We are thrilled to officially add Matt Garriga and Josh Apple to the Tiger basketball family!" said Havens. We feel that both Matt and Josh will address our roster needs and will be great fits for our program with the opportunity to make an immediate impact next season."

Apple will join the Tigers after spending a single season at Collin College, a junior college in Plano, Texas.  Before coming to the US, Apple played at Ipswich Basketball Academy.  As a senior he was also a member of the England U18 National Team and selected to camp for the Great Britain U20 National Team.  Apple averaged 25 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists, 2.3 block and 7.6 steals per game.

Before moving to basketball, Apple was a nationally ranked rugby player at St. Joesph's College in England.

"Josh is an athletic and versatile forward. He has the ability to score in the open floor and can score facing the basket as well as posting up," Havens added.  "Josh also impacts the game with his ability to defend multiple spots on the floor, block shots, and rebound. He is a hard worker with a bright future. We are excited that Josh will have three seasons to play in a Tiger uniform and look for him to make an immediate impact next season."

Garriga has been a standout on the Wylie High School varsity team since his sophomore season and will be a returning captain and starter as a senior in 2017-18.  He was named First Team All-District 6-6A as a junior after averaging 15 points, three rebounds and 2 steals per game.  In 2015-16 Garriga was the District 10-5A Newcomer of the Year when he helped the Pirates to third-place in the district.

"Matt is a very talented guard with a high motor, a strong work ethic, and a great basketball IQ,"
commented Havens.  "He competes at a high level on both ends of the floor. Matt is a tremendous shooter with great range and has the ability to stretch the defense. He is a crafty scorer that understands how to play without the ball and uses screens well off the ball.  Matt comes from great family and will represent our program well both on and off the court."

Garriga is also a standout in the classroom, earning first team all-academic honors the last two seasons.
