Collin College's basketball teams keep adding W's in the run-up to the winter break. The men's and women's teams swept their opponents in the last week to bring their records to 9-1 and 9-2 respectively.
The Lady Cougars defeated the Paul Quinn Junior Varsity squad in back-to-back games. Collin's women traveled to the Lady Tigers on Nov. 27 and won 88-46. Destiny Thurman and Jordynn Hernandez led the team in scoring with 17 and 16 points respectively. Hernandez and Mikayla Alexander each had three steals. Cardrina Nolen came off the bench for nine rebounds.
The Lady Cougars faced Paul Quinn at home on Dec. 4, beating them 96-46. Collin's women held the Lady Tigers scoreless for much of the first quarter and to single digits until well into the second. The Lady Tigers rallied for a better performance in the second half, but Collin had too much firepower in the game and continued to outscore them throughout.
The Lady Cougars shot 52.9 percent from the field and went 11-17 from behind the 3-point line. Brianna Marshall led the team with 18 points, followed closely by Thurman and Jazmine Jackson, who had 17 and 16 points respectively. Hernandez contributed with a team-leading 10 assists.
The Collin men's team notched two wins in the previous week, defeating Brookhaven College 68-47 and North Lake College 83-49.
Tajzmel Sherman scored 18 points and had six assists in Collin's win over Brookhaven College. Nighel Ceaser pulled down 19 rebounds and followed Sherman with 13 points for the night.
Ryan Flores led scoring for the Cougars with 19 against North Lake College, followed by Sherman with 15. Collin got out to an early lead that grew to 22 points by the half. The Blazers tried to close the gap in the second half, but could not.
