Collin College's basketball teams had runaway wins at home, Jan. 30.
The Lady Cougars knocked off the No. 1 team in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) with a 87-65 win over Cisco. Later in the evening, the Collin men's team took a break from the conference slog with a 96-58 trouncing of the East Texas Baptist University junior varsity.
The Lady Cougars came out strong in their game against Cisco and was up by 11 points in the first half before the Lady Wranglers rallied to trail by only three at the end of the second. The second half, though, was all Collin as the Lady Cougars controlled the paint for the remainder of the game, communicating well and stretching their lead by as many as 27 in the third quarter.
Leading scorers for the game were Jordynn Hernandez (21), Jalah Walton (20) and Shala Robinson (19). Hernandez, Robinson and Destiny Thurman each had three steals in the game.
The team shot 47 percent from the floor.
In other NTJCAC news, Briana Marshall was named Region V Player of the Week for Jan. 13-19.
Collin's men dominated the ETBU junior varsity after a slow start. Neither team was able to score in the opening minutes, but ETBU responded to Collin's first bucket with a pair of early steals and buckets to go ahead 5-1.
The Cougars righted the ship quickly though and jumped out to an 18-point lead by the end of the first half. Collin padded its lead in the second half, in part due to the shooting of Tino Sebalj who sank five three-pointers in the game.
Sebalj went 6-8 from the floor to lead the team with 18 points. He was followed by perennial high scorer Tajzmel Sherman with 15 and River Reed with 14. Both Sebalj and Reed recently returned from ankle injuries and made their presences known in the game.
Both teams play at home against Hill College on Feb. 6. The women's game starts at 5:30 p.m. The men will play beginning at 7:30 p.m.
