Collin College Tennis Season Ends with COVID-19 Shutdowns

In an effort to help slow community spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, the remaining Collin College tennis matches for Spring 2020 have been cancelled. The men's team finished 9-9, and the women's team finished 8-11.

Dr. Neil Matkin, Collin College District President, announced on March 18 that the majority of the college's classes would be delivered in an online format. Likewise, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced it would cancel spring competition on March 17. You can read that notice here.

Coach Marty Berryman, who will retire at the end of this academic year, said that while he agrees that the cancellation was the right move to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the dangers it presents, he is saddened that his final year of coaching at Collin College ended this way.

"This is sad, mostly for the players," Berryman said. "They worked hard. My assistant Patrick Nguyen had been doing an awesome job with them. The second half of the season was the best to come."

He said he spoke with his players after learning the season would be cancelled.

"I met with many of them, in person or over the phone," he said. "Like me, they knew we were going to be very competitive  at the SW JUCO (Southwest Junior College tournament), Region V championships and NJCAA nationals."

Several players were named to the 2019-20 North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) All-Academic Team.

Berryman said that right now he wants his players to be safe. Many of the international players on the team had returned to their home countries by the end of last week. Some, he said, are staying to complete their spring semesters at Collin.

Several players, both international and domestic, will return this fall ready for athletic competition and academic success. Berryman said he is excited to see what the college will do in the coming year.

"My heart is with the Collin College Cougar tennis program," he said. "I am looking forward to seeing it built better than ever!"
