With post-season play just a few weeks away, Collin College's basketball teams are facing some of the toughest competition yet.
The Cougars picked up three wins, taking one into overtime. The Lady Cougars had two losses in recent games.
Collin's men's team defeated visiting Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) junior varsity, 116-62, on Feb. 9. The game was never in doubt, as the Cougars jumped out to a 24-point lead at the half and continued to dominate for the rest of the game. Jay Wilson led scoring with 20 points. He was followed by Lav Cvetkovic with 15 and John Achebe with 14. The team found the basket well, shooting 59.3 percent from the field. Achebe had three steals.
Collin went to overtime with Weatherford College a few days later, eventually coming out on top 88-84. Achebe led scoring with 20 points and added four steals and a block. Isaiah Washington followed with 18 points, and Thai Elder scored 10. Weatherford's defense limited shooting opportunities more than SAGU had, but the Cougars still shot a respectable 46.7 percent from the field and 18-23 from the free throw line.
A men's game against Grayson College was postponed after one half of play, Feb. 14.
The Lady Cougars lost on the road to Weatherford College, 85-77, on Feb. 12. Collin got off to a quick start, ending the first quarter up 9 points before Weatherford found its legs and in the second quarter and carried the lead through to the end of the game. The Lady Cougars had a rough shooting night, sinking just 37.3 percent of their shots from the field and 9-23 from behind the arc. Mykaila Pickard led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 17 points, followed by Nikki Green and Skye Dugan with 15 points each.
Dugan took the top scoring spot in the Lady Cougars' 71-55 loss at home against Grayson College, Feb. 14. Dugan scored 14 points in the game, while also notching a team-leading five assists and four steals. Green and Dustie Obah followed Dugan in scoring with 11 points each.
