Collin College's tennis teams put up five wins in the past two weeks and are fighting through the heaviest parts of their schedules. The teams will focus on fitness in the coming weeks to prepare for play in May.

The men's team picked up wins against Midland University (6-1), Seward County Community College (6-3), and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (7-2). The women's team notched wins over Midland University (6-3) and Mississippi Gulf Coast (9-0). Both teams had trouble with Cowley County Community College and Tyler Junior College, who Coach Jamie Nanez called "the best teams in the country for both men's and women's tennis."

He noted, however, that Collin had some individual wins against the teams.

Tristan Vigneron Scattarregia and Luis Ching beat Tyler's No. 1 doubles team, while Vigneron Scattarregia was able to beat Tyler's No. 2 singles player. Larissa Giraldi Correa has now beaten Tyler's No. 1 twice and continues to be competitive with each team we play.

"She is definitely setting the tone for our players to compete hard," Nanez said. "I think she is surprising some players/coaches this year."

Nanez said he spoke to the Tyler coaches before their match, and they have been impressed with some of Collin's players' development over the past six months.

Nanez noted that this is the heaviest part of the teams' schedules and that he is looking forward to Southwest JUCO, April 7-8, as a big test for the teams.

"That is a precursor to nationals, as we use a similar tournament format," he said. "The plan is to now enter into the development and fitness phase in our practices.  May in Texas can be sneaky hot and humid, so making sure our bodies are prepared for that is so important for both the men and women."
