Collin College Tennis recently picked up four team wins and fared well in individual competition. The players are learning every time they step on the court, according to their coach.
Collin Men's Tennis beat Meridian Community College 8-1 and Texas A&M University-Texarkana 9-0 while hosting the teams on Feb. 23. They had a close match against Our Lady of the Lakes two days later, coming up 4-3. The team lost 7-0 to The University of the Incarnate Word the same day, but Coach Jamie Nanez believes that was mostly due to physical and mental fatigue.
"When you play at that level, you have to be so focused on what you are doing that, if you are not used to having to focus for each shot point-after-point, it takes its toll," Nanez said. "We talked about it as a team, and I think they were just tired."
Nanez said that Minjae Kim and José Castillo had a very strong doubles match against Incarnate Word. While the team lost the doubles point, the pair had some success. Despite the final team score, he saw sparks of excellence in other doubles pairs as well.
"As much as we work on doubles, the thought was that we would be better there," Nanez said. "I don't think it's about practice. I think it is just about succeeding at pressure points.
"I'm hoping we'll start converting those chances at some point."
The Collin Women's Tennis team defeated Barton Community College and Meridian 6-3 on Feb. 22 and 23, respectively. The women got their first doubles win and point in the Barton game.
Nanez said the team has been rotating out doubles partners on the women's side to ensure everyone has an opportunity to play with different partners and find the best combinations.
The team has begun two-a-day practices and continues to work on taking advantage of opportunities as they present themselves on the court.
"We've had success in different areas of the lineup, but we just haven't put it all together yet," Nanez said.
