Collin College competed in the 2024 National Junior College Athletic Association Women's Tennis Tournament from May 4-8, closing out the tournament at No. 14. Coach Jamie Nanez said the players gained valuable experience from participating in the tournament.
The team, which has been hampered by injuries, battled through the tournament and was able to pull out a consolation singles final win by Ekaterina Orlova and a consolation doubles win by Orlova and Mikayla Plitt.
Sophia Dalla, Alyssa Glasgow, and Plitt each won their first-round two set singles matches convincingly before losing in the Round of 16. Dalla and Plitt both drew strong competitors in the second round, with Plitt facing off against Arina Babenko, who eventually won her singles flight in the tournament.
Dalla also faced off against a competitor who worked her way to the finals in Flight 4.
"Sophia did well," Nanez said. "It was a close match. She did everything she could.
"It's tough when you get those kinds of draws."
First-round losses moved Orlova and Jinsol Yang to the consolation bracket, but both players fought their way into the finals of their flights. As noted above, Orlova would go on to win hers 8-2. She also claimed an 8-2 consolation doubles win alongside Plitt.
A foot injury kept Yang out of the consolation finals match, forcing a walkover after a recently healed cut reopened due to strenuous play.
"If I'd have let her, she would have played, but it would have just hurt her more," Nanez said. "I didn't want her to have to get more stitches."
Nanez said that the team's goal was to finish in the Top 10, and while they did not achieve that this season, he believes that the experience will help his young team going into next year.
"We got some experience," he said. "Even the players who went but didn't play because they were hurt got to see what it takes to be successful.
"If we are going to win and be successful, they must realize how many days we will have to show up."
He said that is helpful with a young team. The only player the team is graduating this year is Orlova, so many players will likely be back next year.
