Collin College Women's Basketball split its last two games with a loss to Temple College and a big win over Ranger College. The team is ranked No. 3 in North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) standings.
The Cougars lost 79-67 at home on Feb. 12 to Temple despite a 31-point performance by Kenzie Willis-Gusters, who led all players in scoring. Gusters sank 10-23 shots, using her physicality under the basket to create buckets. She was followed by Alisha Nunley with 9 points and Olivia Grgicevich-Lassey with 8 points. Grgicevich-Lassey also had a pair of blocks, one of which almost ended up in the stands. Nunley led the team in rebounds with 10.
The game started off slowly for the Cougars, who fell behind 14 points by the end of the first quarter. Save for Willis-Gusters, Collin players had a tough time sinking shots thanks to tough defense from the visiting team. The team shot 33.3% from the field.
The Cougars had a better shooting performance in their 65-37 win over Ranger a few days later. The team sank 41% from the field in the road game, with Taliah Martin leading all scorers. Martin had 18 points, followed by Nunley with 14 points, and Sara Basaran with 9.
In a mirror image of the previous game, Collin jumped out to a 10-point lead and continued to build on it throughout the game. Collin led every quarter.
The Cougars' next home game is against McLennan Community College on Feb. 26. Collin is the only team to have beaten McLennan in conference play so far this year, so it should be a good game against a nationally ranked opponent. The game is also Community night, and Athletics is encouraging fans to bring canned food items to donate to Lovepacs of Plano. Every canned food item donated is worth one raffle ticket for great prizes.
