Collin College Women's Basketball defeated nationally ranked McLennan Community College for the second time this season, making them the only North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) team to hand losses to the nationally ranked Highlassies.
The Cougars notched the 72-58 win on Feb. 26. The first half was a back-and-forth, physical battle that saw McLennan take a 1-point lead heading into the break. Collin came out fired up in the second half and leading by 6 at the end of the third quarter and outscoring the visitors by 8 points in the fourth quarter. For the game, the team shot 39.7% from the field and a strong 42.9% from beyond the arc.
Alisha Nunley turned in another high scoring performance with 25 points and led the team with four steals. She was followed by Kenzie Willis-Gusters with 14 points and Taliah Martin with 9 points. Martin and Nunley each had seven rebounds – six each off the defensive glass.
The win set up a potential rematch in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region V Tournament in mid-March. Both teams are on track to make the tournament, with McLennan going in ranked No. 1 in NTJCAC standings. Collin is currently No. 3 in the standings and has two away games before the team faces off against No. 2 Grayson at home on March 8.
The Cougars also picked up a 94-45 win over Hill College last week, with slightly more balanced scoring among the team. Every member of the team scored in the game, with Willis-Gusters leading. Her 18 points were followed by Nunley with 16 points. Julianna Dada and Sara Basaran each had 12 points to round out the top scorers. The Cougars had a strong shooting night, sinking 56.7% of their field goals.
